Last night, at approximately 11:45pm, the power in my entire building went out. Then, thankfully, the backup generators turned on. No more than 30 seconds later, the backup generators went out too. Everyone rushed into the halls to ask their neighbors what was going on but, of course, no one knew. A mass hysteria broke out as we realized the most important aspect of life for a college student (the WiFi) had just vanished before our eyes. The residence advisors began trying to sooth the nerves of the panic stricken, passed out flashlights with dead batteries, and asked us kindly to shut the fuck up. A girl was seen doing backwards rolls down the hallway.
This morning, at exactly 7:22am alarms started blaring. This was not the alarm I had set on my phone to wake me up, but instead a very loud emergency alarm that was broadcasting to all but the 8th and 9th floors. I groggily threw on pants, walked out of my door, walked back into my room, grabbed my cell phone, and evacuated the building, leaving my wallet, money, and any form of I.D. in my room. Some said there had been a fire, or potentially a gas leak, but no one was positive. Over 900 college student flooded out into the streets of Boston in the snow, some wearing pants, others not wearing pants, and one wearing nothing but a parka and flip-flops. The people living on the 8th and 9th floors, seeing as they did not have a working fire alarm, slept through this whole ordeal. Many walked out of the building showered and fully clothed, confused as to why so many people were walking around campus and standing outside the building in their pajamas. #safetythird
Moments later, people began tweeting. Many reported smelling gas upon waking up, and this quickly turned into rumors of a gas leak. The source of this smell is still unclear, but college officials are adamant that it was not, in fact, a gas leak and claim that the smell was from the back up generators (even though the back up generators had not been running all night...). The official story is that, due to flooding caused by excess snow, there was a fire in a nearby manhole. The fire occurred 7 hours after the initial power outage.
It is currently 6:44pm, and the power has still yet to be restored. Half of the building is also without hot water or heat. If there is a silver lining to this, I actually met a number of people from my building that I had previously not known. A group of us got breakfast while most of our building was standing in the cold like idiotic herd of sheep without a shepherd. New friends are always good. Also, to make this car related, I saw a Unimog today!

"A girl was seen doing backwards rolls down the hallway."
What.
And making new friends in odd situations is always fun. Living in residence is less so. No, I'm not bitter about my time in res.

Yup. No idea why, but there she was doing backwards rolls down a lightless hallway.
This year has been better than last year, as I have a single that is bigger than some doubles with a private bathroom. Last year I lived in a new building though, so shit like this didn't happen.
I am very excited to get an apartment in the next year or two.

Sounds like it worked out well for the most part.
I would be pretty suspicious of the Building Management though. Those are some serious Fire and Life Safety problems.

It definitely could have been worse. Though I would love to be studying in my room instead of Starbucks. As for the safety concerns.... yeah. Someone seriously dropped the ball on vital building maintenance if over around 200 people did not have working fire alarms. If there had been an actual fire or something, that would have been absolutely horrible. There are a number of people contacting the Residence Hall Director. I will be as well.

No power sucks! I can handle the lack of lightning and most appliances but no WIFI is hell!
I have an easy fix for the WIFI, providing you still have a signal on the phone line(usually the phone line still works) Have a look at the power input requirements on the modem/router, usually it's 12 vdc. If so its very easy to hook up the modem to a 12v car battery or a GellCell(Sealed Lead Acid) and run the modem for a few hours. For that you need a plug to suit but it's easy to cut one off an old unused plug pack. Obviously you need to make sure the polarity is correct. If you have frequent power outages it can be set up so that the modem always gets its power from the battery which can be connected to a maintenance charger. It works like a UPS and can cost very little if you can scavenge the parts required.

My dorm was famous for having the fire alarm go off. Sometimes it was drunk people pulling the alarm. Other times it was tripped by burnt pop corn. One time someone had the idea to try to propel themselves on a rolley chair using a fire extinguisher. We had to stay outside while the RAs cleaned up. Took hours. Fire department has to come every time. Made some friends. Luckily it was never terribly cold. Often people would go stay in a friends room in another dorm because sometimes it was a few minutes and others it was hours.
